There will be exit pollsters at 130 of the 650 seats (Image: Getty)
What is an exit poll?
The exit poll is the best indication of what the result of an election is going to be before it is officially released.
The research is carried out for the three major broadcasters by Ipsos and sees voters asked to fill in a mock ballot paper as they leave their polling station. This process takes place at 130 of the 650 polling stations.
Those who fill out the mock ballot are asked to indicate how they voted.

He told The Telegraph: "The record isn’t perfect, but since 2005 the exit poll has given a pretty good indication of where the result will end up on the night. It also tends to be more accurate than opinion polls carried out before voting happens."
At the last election the exit poll was very close to actual result. The prediction was that the Tories under Boris Johnson had won 368 seats - they won 365. Meanwhile, Labour were predicted to take 191 seats but took 203.
This time around, exit pollsters shouldn't have too much trouble predicting the victor, but let's see how accurately they forecast the make-up of the next parliament.
