PETALING JAYA: Continuous rain since Friday has wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, and the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued statements saying that heavy and prolonged rain is expected to continue today.

In Selangor, the number of flood victims breached the 3,000 mark on Saturday, said state Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis, adding that they were from the Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang districts.

“A total of 3,086 victims have been evacuated so far.

“The highest number of victims were from Klang (2,604) and 17 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate them,” he said when contacted yesterday.

In Kuala Langat and Sepang, 482 victims have also been evacuated and sent to nine evacuation centres.

“According to our data, the SK Johan Setia evacuation centre is currently housing 793 victims, followed by SK Telok Gong (681 victims) and Masjid Al-Islah (256 victims),” said Norazam.

Flash floods in the Klang Valley also temporarily closed down Giant Malaysia stores until further notice. Giant Malaysia said its stores were temporarily closed from 7pm yesterday and updates on reopening would be shared on its Facebook page, as videos showing a flooded Giant store, believed to be in Shah Alam, made their rounds on social media.

In updates on its Facebook page, MetMalaysia said heavy prolonged rain was expected in Gua Musang, Kelantan, and in Lipis, Jerantut, Maran and Kuantan in Pahang.
