Weapons detectors will be installed at DuVal High School on Wednesday, two days after a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed while leaving the school, according to a letter from the principal to families.

Prince George’s County Public Schools expedited the security equipment, according to Superintendent Millard House II. Originally, it would have been in place in the next couple of months. All high schools in the district, which is Maryland’s second-largest, are expected to receive weapons detectors by January.

“We’re going to actually move that up to ensure that this community feels the kind of safety that we know it wants,” House said Monday.

On Tuesday, police identified the teen who was killed as Jayda Medrano Moore. She was a member of the high school’s girls basketball team and dreamed of turning pro with the Women’s National Basketball Association, according to a GoFundMe appeal started by a family member. She was just a few weeks short of turning 17.

House described Jayda as “bright” and “vibrant.”

“Her potential, quite frankly, boundless. Her dreams and aspirations, her talent, promising,” House said at a news conference Monday night. “She was a dedicated student, a beloved daughter, cherished friend and a source of inspiration for many.”

Officials said that Jayda, of Greenbelt, was walking down Palamar Drive in the Lanham area after school Monday afternoon when a dispute broke out between two groups. During the dispute, police said, someone fired a gun that killed Jayda.

Police were still searching Tuesday for the person who fired the shot. They said they did not know whether Jayda was involved in the dispute. They were also investigating whether the groups were students or adults.

Police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest or indictment in the case.

DuVal Principal Pamela Smith said in a letter to families that there would be more security at the school on Tuesday. A county cruiser was parked across the street as teachers and students arrived. The school also had grief counselors on-site.

Callista Brown, an 18-year-old DuVal student, said she has walked through the neighborhood where Jayda was killed, and that many other students live and walk there.

“It’s very eye-awakening that she was just walking home and her life got taken so quickly, so fast,” Brown said.

Brown said she was at softball practice Monday when she saw players on the field hiding behind bleachers. The soccer team was playing a game against Bowie High School.

“The coach was like, ‘Everyone needs to go inside, go inside now,’” Brown said.

Students didn’t know what was happening, Brown said. They went into the small gym for a few minutes and then were rushed into the school cafeteria, where they remained on lockdown from 3:55 until about 5 p.m.

There were about 100 people sheltering inside, Brown said. All after-school activities and games were canceled. Brown left when her grandmother came to pick her up.

Tarik Ndongo, a father of a DuVal senior, said the high school is a good school. While violence is usually a “one-off situation” and not systemic, the accessibility to guns has turned infighting among youth deadly, he said.

“It’s how they choose to handle things,” said Ndongo, 42. “Now that you have access to things where you can expound on your anger and frustration and take action on it with a gun, they do it. … It’s sad.”
