KUALA LUMPUR: Interpol has issued red notices for fugitive businessmen Low Taek Jho and Nicky Liow Soon Hee, but the notices are only for the access of enforcement agencies.

       Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said Bukit Aman applied the red notices for Jho Low on June 11, 2018, and Liow on April 20 (this year).

       “There are two categories of Interpol Red Notice. The first are the notices that can be accessed by members of the public while the other is only for enforcement agencies.

       “Interpol headquarters determines whether a red notice is for public access or only for enforcement agencies. It depends on the seriousness level and threat to the public,” he said in a statement.

       The IGP said red notices for both men have indeed been issued but it was for the eyes of enforcement agencies only.

       “The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) remains committed in ensuring that both men are detained,” he said.

       In April this year, it was reported that Interpol had approved a red notice to locate and detain Liow and his 31-year-old Chinese national wife Liu Zhe.

       Police want him to face charges related to organised crime, money laundering, the Macau scam and commercial crime.

       An Interpol red notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and detain persons of interest.

       It is issued by the General Secretariat following the request of a member country or an international tribunal.

       As for Jho Low, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had requested that Interpol issue a red notice to detain him to assist in investigations over the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

       He was charged in absentia in 2018 with four other individuals central to the investigation.
