A little-known seaside community has been dubbed "fairytale" worthy thanks to its stunning beach views.

Starcross, in Devon, is often overlooked due to its proximity to Exeter but boasts rivalling views and a rich history.

But, while it is famous for its beauty and popular with sailors and birdwatchers, it is "underrated".

Non-locals have told how they feel they have a better appreciation of the community after travelling in for work.

Commuters have said when they aren't working, they "miss" the town of roughly 1,780.

Devon Live's Mary Stenson wrote how she had "always wanted to explore this part of the county".

When she finally took the plunge, she found she was "struck with the tranquillity" of the "sometimes overlooked" town.

Starcross was described as a "petty hamlet" in 1820 that, over 50 years, grew into a "large and well-built watering-place".

The town has a centuries-long reputation for seafood, having been famous for its "cockles and its oysters" as far back as the 1870s.

Starcross sits on the Great Western Railway, following the route laid out by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Trains pass through the town within feet of the water, giving people a unique view of the estuary coast, which runs down to Exeter.

Starcross Fishing & Cruising Club carries the seafaring reputation into the 21st century, with The Atmospheric Railway Inn representing the historic rail network.

Even with its extensive local history, Gill Angliss, a front-of-house staffer for the inn, said she feels it is seen as "somewhere that you drive through".

But she said the town has a lot to offer, citing the pub and a local spa as examples, with other neighbouring communities having lost similar attractions.

Outsiders are similarly appreciative and have nothing but high praise for Starcross.

Nia, a resident of nearby Dawlish who works for coffee firm Teign Bean, said the town is "absolutely stunning".

She said people can view the town's beauty from multiple angles, out on water and by train, with multiple waus to see the "lovely part of the world".
