PETALING JAYA: The advertising and marketing sectors offer the most jobs in Malaysia, with over 7,000 vacancies available, says the Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM).

The department added that other widely available openings include administrative associate professionals (5,653 vacancies), managing directors and chief executives (4,112), accountants and auditors (3,675) and software developers (3,296).

In a statement by the Chief Statistician yesterday, it said the number of online job vacancies rose for the fourth consecutive quarter to 90,502 in Q2 2021.

This is an increase of 284 from 90,218 posted in the previous quarter.

“In general, most of the employers demanded professional workers (50.8%), followed by technicians and associate professionals (19.2%) and managers (18.4%),” it added.

The top hiring industries include professional, scientific and technical activities; manufacturing activities; wholesale and retail trade; motor vehicle and motorcycle repair activities; financial and insurance or takaful activities; as well as accommodation and food service activities.

“Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest demand, with 42,163 vacancies, followed by Selangor (17,696), Johor (6,403), Pulau Pinang (5,598) and Perak (1,237),” the department added.

DOSM said 63% of the 90,502 job vacancies for the second quarter are related to technical and vocational education and training (TVET), followed by science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with 27%.

Software engineer job posi-tions top the list for the STEM category with 850 vacancies, followed by project manager (754), graphic designer (725), technician (723) and engineer (490).

According to the Institute of Labour Market Information and Analysis (Ilmia), other job titles under TVET categories include aircraft engine mechanics and repairers; meat and fish processing and related food preparers, among others.

It added that some of the job titles under the STEM category also include aquaculture and fisheries production managers; audiologists and speech therapists; chemical engineers; and computer network and systems technicians.

In a previous statement for Key Statistics of the Labour Force in Malaysia on Oct 8, DOSM said the unemployment rate in August 2021 had been reduced by 0.2 percentage points to 4.6% compared to July, which recorded 4.8%.

“Accordingly, the number of unemployed persons reduced by 3.8% month-on-month. This was the first decline in the unemployment after registering increases in June and July 2021,” the department said, adding that the economic performance in the country will increase labour demand, including the creation of more job opportunities.

“Although the challenges will remain in the upcoming months due to the uncertain public health situation, the implementation of the National Recovery Plan, which has allowed for a safe reopening of the economy, may partly navigate the country’s economy to progressively recover,” it added.
