An ex-minister says her face was added to a sexually explicit film scene in a vile fake YouTube video made by another MP. The former minister said it was part of a horrific campaign of harassment that lasted years – but when she asked party whips for help, they simply laughed.
The shocking claims were made in a submission to an inquiry led by Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who is looking at the growing problem of harassment and threats aimed at politicians and candidates. The name of the victim has not been made public, but she appears to have been a Conservative who served in government during the Covid pandemic.

She has written to the inquiry calling on the Speaker to ensure nobody else can suffer in the same way. She said: “Whilst in Parliament I was also subjected to YEARS of harassment from a fellow colleague. It was extremely upsetting, caused untold hurt to key constituents and me and the terminology he used about named people was utterly deplorable as well as the absolute untruths he invented about them.”

She added: “Much of this was charted on his blog and YouTube with insulting videos made about named people including me. The final outrage was the creation of a fake YouTube video superimposing my, and another elected representatives’, faces onto a sexually explicit film scene. This was also circulated widely.

The former minister said: “A number of times I went home in tears on the train, it was hugely upsetting." She added: "I think the system has now improved but I urge you as Speaker to ensure nothing like this can ever occur again.”
A Conservative Party spokesperson said: "Any harassment or abuse of MPs is completely unacceptable. The Conservative Party has an established code of conduct and formal processes where complaints can be made in confidence.
“When complaints are made about bullying, harassment and intimidation they are investigated through a robust grievances process
“It is the Party's practice to refer complainants to the most appropriate body to investigate their complaint, if that is not the Conservative Party."
It was one of a series of warnings from politicians about abuse they received, with others highlighting threats and harassment from the general public.
One talked about getting death threats as a candidate. They said: “I had taxis sitting outside my house and my family member’s house in the middle of the night. I was told I would be beheaded.”
But they said: “The police attitude was that it was the rough and tumble of politics.”

Even police and crime commissioners (PCC), the elected politicians overseeing policing in many parts of England, struggled to convince their local force to take the harassment they received seriously.
The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners told the Speaker: “In one case, a PCC faced seven years of sustained harassment before law enforcement took action, illustrating gaps in threat management.”
Other PCCs experienced “death threats, alongside rape threats, as well as threats to family”, the association said.
One of the few politicians not to request anonymity was former MP Simon Danczuk, who has told the inquiry about his experience as the Reform candidate in last year’s Rochdale by-election. He said: “Thirty-six hours before polling day I received a message from my ex-wife who lives in Rochdale with my two young children explaining that intruders had attempted to enter the family home in the middle of the night but were deterred by the sophisticated alarm system.”
The Members’ and Peers’ Staff Association, which is run by staff working for MPs and members of the House of Lords, said researchers were asked to accompany politicians on their journeys home to keep them safe.
The Association said: “Staffers have reported escorting these MPs back to their London residence or to a safe spot away from Westminster, thereby acting as a form of security and protection while also risking their own safety and wellbeing.
“While this expectation should not be placed on staff, the wider issue is ensuring that both MPs and staff are in a position where they can feel safe and have additional security at their disposal when they are in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation.”
Dame Sara Khan, a former government adviser on social cohesion and democratic resilience, highlighted the case of one council leader who told her: “I have received thousands of death threats, letters and messages saying they are following me home, threats to my two-year-old daughter about being gang raped and trafficked.”

The council leader said: “I make my daughter sleep next to a fire blanket in case someone firebombs my home, as a previous councillor has had her property firebombed.”
The Home Office allocated ￡31million last year to strengthen protection for politicians. Every politician and candidate is given a named police contact to provide security advice while forces were given funding to appoint elected official advisers.
The inquiry is overseen by a committee chaired by Sir Lindsay which includes 14 backbench MPs from different parties. It was set up partly as a result of intimidation of candidates in last year’s General Rlection, including targeting of Labour candidates by anti-Israel campaigners. The Speaker will publish a report with findings later this year.
