KEPALA BATAS: A policeman suffered serious injuries after he was hit by a motorcyclist who was trying to evade arrest during a Covid-19 operation at Penaga on Thursday (Sept 9).

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the policeman broke his right shoulder in the 1am incident.

"During the operation, we stumbled upon a motorcyclist using a fancy plate number, and ordered him to stop for inspection.

"The suspect, however, rode his machine dangerously with the intention to escape," he said in a statement on Friday (Sept 10).

ACP Noorzainy said one of the policemen in the operation then approached the suspect again but he still refused to stop.

He said in his haste to escape, the suspect, in his 20s, crashed his motorcycle into another policeman at a junction nearby.

"The incident resulted in the victim being dragged for about 20m and caused him to be thrown into a drain.

"The suspect then tried to flee on foot but was apprehended not far away," he said, adding that nothing illegal was found on him after a body inspection.

ACP Noorzainy said the suspect was brought to the district police headquarters for further action while the injured cop was sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital.

He said the suspect would be investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for voluntarily obstructing a public servant in discharging his duty.

In an unrelated incident, a pillion rider was killed instantly when he accidentally fell at KM5.5 of the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) on Thursday.

ACP Noorzainy said the victim and his friend, both Rohingya nationals, were on their way from their workplace in Tasek Gelugor to their house in Bagan Ajam at about 7.15pm.

"When they reached the stretch, the victim fell from the moving motorcycle," he said.

ACP Noorzainy said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel due to severe head injuries.

The rider, however, was not injured.

ACP Noorzainy said the remains of the victim was sent for Covid-19 screening and a post-mortem.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act.
