GEORGE TOWN: A continuous downpour has caused part of Bayan Baru to be submerged with water.
Rain which started at 8am on Tuesday (Aug 24) has caused water puddles along Jalan Tengah.
The drainage near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Raja Tun Uda was also full due to the rain.
Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz said the flash flood was due to rising sea water level this morning.
"The rising water was due to the high tide," he said.
Traffic flow remained slow at main roads in Bayan Baru as motorists waded through the rising water. However no accidents were reported in the incident.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), there would be rain and thunderstorms daily in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak this week.
Perlis, Kedah and Penang could also expect thunderstorms every day except Thursday. Kuala Lumpur is expected to see a few sunny days but there would be thunderstorms in several places over the week.
A spokesman for MetMalaysia said it was currently the south-west monsoon, which is not as intense as the north-east monsoon.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain were expected to occur during evenings and nights in the west-coast states of the Peninsula and most areas in Sabah and Sarawak until next Thursday as a result of the ongoing weak phase (monsoon break) of the south-west monsoon.
