UK Covid deaths have risen by 15 per cent in a week with 37 new fatalities recorded in 24 hours.

Cases of the virus have risen by 25,161 today as the number of people infected with the virus reaches 6,094,243.

And the Covid death toll now stands at 130,357 after 37 more fatalities were recorded today.

It's now been three full weeks since England's lockdown ended and Brits celebrated Freedom Day on July 19.

This comes as Covid hospital admissions in England have plunged by 82 per cent from the winter peak - raising hopes Brits may soon be able to put the pandemic behind them.

Despite doomsday predictions of soaring cases and hospitalisations over the summer, infections appear to have stabilised at around 30,000 a day.

And with 86million jabs doled out, the UK may well be turning the tide on the virus.

On January 22, 4,096 people were in critical care beds suffering with Covid, while 1,041 deaths were recorded.

As of the end of July, 817 people were in ICU battling the virus. There were 131 fatalities reported on the same day.

And last night, Covid vaccines were doled out at London's Heaven nightclub in a bid to get youngsters jabbed.

More than 1,000 Pfizer doses were administered at the venue until 9pm yesterday.

       COVID TOLL

This comes amid news that Boris Johnson is preparing to water down his plans for vaccine passports to head off a mutiny of Tory MPs.

The PM is said to be looking at proposals to introduce Covid papers on a voluntary basis if there are future spikes of the virus.

Under the plan nightclubs and concern venues would be able to avoid social distancing by asking people to produce the NHS app.

The scheme would mark a significant softening of No 10's stance on vaccine passports which has drawn fire from MPs.

Boris previously announced nightclubs would only be allowed to admit party-goers who are fully jabbed from September.

And ministers had said that policy could be extended to other crowded indoor settings like concerts and even theatres.

Rowing back on making Covid papers mandatory would allow the PM to avoid a damaging Commons vote, reports the Telegraph.
