Holidays: Travelling to Spain ‘is not worth it’ warns Dr Amir

       Andalusia, renowned for its rich history, lengthy beaches, and charming white villages, also hosts a remarkable natural wonder: the Tabernas Desert.

       Situated in the heart of this region, the desert spans approximately 280 square kilometres and distinguishes itself as a rare gem in Europe that captures the fascination of visitors.

       The Tabernas Desert's formation stretches back millions of years, and the exceptional climatic conditions of the area have yielded a breathtaking desert landscape.

       Immersed within the Tabernas Desert is an arid and diverse terrain. Its desolate appearance is adorned with a variety of geological formations, including hills, mountains, and plains sculpted by the forces of wind and water.

       These natural features create a stunning backdrop frequently used in western and desert-themed films, making it a paradise for movie enthusiasts.

       Characterised by a desert climate, the Tabernas Desert experiences infrequent rainfall and extreme temperatures. Summers are scorching and dry, with mercury levels often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, while winters are mild and cool.

       These harsh conditions have fostered a unique ecosystem where only well-adapted plants and animals can thrive, further enhancing the region's allure.

       Despite its barren fa？ade, the Tabernas Desert teems with an unexpected diversity of life. It plays host to numerous plant species, including cacti, hawthorns, and succulents, which have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive in these arid surroundings. The fauna of the desert encompasses reptiles, birds of prey, foxes, badgers, rabbits, and more.

       Exploring the splendid landscape of the Tabernas Desert offers visitors a range of activities and attractions. 4x4 excursions permit tourists to venture into the remote areas and encounter the wildlife that calls this desert home. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities abound, as marked routes and trails provide an avenue to admire the region's beauty.

       Even though it's perhaps not a typical tourist destination, the Tabernas has proved a popular place to visit for tourists, as it is rated four out of five stars on TripAdvisor. One review read: "I'd say this is one of the most impressive places I’ve been to in the world and especially in Europe.

       "The landscape is out of this world and it really feels like you’ve travelled to somewhere in the United States rather than Spain. A must visit when in the area."

       Moreover, the desert is home to several theme parks, such as the renowned "Mini Hollywood" Western Theme Park, where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the ambience of the Old West. Here, they can relish cowboy shows and thrilling Wild West-style duels, adding an extra touch of excitement to their desert adventure.

       A visitor wrote: "A great day out, even out of season. We went in February, so no crowds easy to park, and a great coffee.

       The shows were not available on the day we went, but it was a Friday and out of season. We spent over three hours here, with great views, so plenty to take pics of."
