RIO DE JANEIRO, May 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and several injured during a police operation against drug trafficking on Tuesday in a favela in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, the Military Police said.
The action took place in Vila Cruzeiro during an operation by the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the Military Police to capture alleged leaders of the largest criminal faction in the city.
According to the Military Police report, the agents were met with gunfire from the upper part of the favela. They responded and left at least 10 suspects dead, and another fatality was a 41-year-old woman hit by a stray bullet.
At least 11 long guns, four pistols and a grenade, along with a large quantity of drugs, were also seized.
