The EU has confirmed it will start charging UK holidaymakers a new €7 fee to get into countries including France, Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal with a date set for the introduction of the rules. The union says travellers from the UK to the EU will have to pay the visa waiver next summer.

The bloc says the new charge will start "in the first half of 2025". EU home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson said the visa waiver may be in place by the May half-term holiday in 2025. She also confirmed the Entry/Exit Scheme (EES) - which will require non-EU travellers to register fingerprints and a photo instead of having their passport stamped - will start on November 10.
Under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), passengers must apply for a waiver, similar to the US ESTA, before travel. Once paid, the waiver will be valid for three years, unless your passport expires before that date.

You will not need the waiver for Ireland. Ms Johansson said: "After intense dialogues with Member States, with you, with the different stakeholders – I have decided that the Entry/Exit System will enter into operations on 10 November."
The ETIAS fee will start six months later. Ms Johansson said: "We will know if people stay too long" and it "will make it harder for criminals, terrorists or Russian spies to use fake passports."
Long queues have been predicted as holidaymakers will take an average of three minutes each to be processed instead of the current 45 seconds. UK passengers will need to apply online or via a mobile app to get the form and will. It will take around 10 minutes to fill in.
