Ferry 'sinks' off coast of Sulawesi island

In a heartbreaking incident off the coast of Sulawesi island, an island in Indonesia, at least 15 lives were lost as a ferry sank during a routine 20-minute journey.

The ill-fated boat was carrying 40 passengers when it capsized just after midnight on Sunday, triggering a frantic search and rescue operation.

Search and rescue teams managed to rescue some individuals, who were promptly taken for medical assistance. However, nineteen passengers are still unaccounted for, causing much distress for the families who are anxiously awaiting updates about their loved ones.

Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago comprising approximately 17,000 islands, is no stranger to frequent marine accidents.

The country occasionally experiences similar unfortunate incidents, mainly due to the challenges posed by marine transport and safety standards.

Overcrowding and lack of proper equipment have also been cited as common factors in similar incidents.

In 2018, a catastrophic incident in one of the world's deepest lakes claimed over 150 lives when a ferry sank on Sumatra Island. The 2018 event was the result of the ferry being loaded beyond its capacity, with an improper distribution of passengers and cargo. The already precarious situation was worsened by the presence of high waves.

The severity of the incident was also exacerbated as escape routes were obstructed by vehicles, leaving numerous passengers trapped onboard, unable to find a way to safety.

Another harrowing incident occurred in May 2022 when a ferry carrying more than 800 people ran aground in shallow waters off the East Nusa Tenggara province. In that incident, no passengers were harmed but were stuck on board for 2 days.
