Starmer's Labour got fewer votes than what the party received under Corbyn in 2019 (Image: Getty)
Keir Starmer has been celebrating the landslide victory the Labour Party has secured over the Conservatives at the poll, which saw the party secure 412 seats.
Sir Keir failed to beat the record former party leader Jeremy Corbyn set at the 2019 general election.
However, he succeeded in ousting Rishi Sunak from Number 10 as he won enough seats to become the UK's next Prime Minister.
This was possible despite Labour getting fewer votes than it did under Mr Corbyn's tenure at the last general election when 10,295,907 voted for the party.
Latest data show Sir Keir's Labour only got 9,686,329 votes, 609,578 fewer than five years ago. The vote share, however, was less widespread than in 2019, ensuring he would be declared the victor.

READ MORE: Labour left issues early warning to Starmer giving him '2 years to get radical'
Corbyn was expelled from the Labour Party last year and ran as an independent in Islington North (Image: Getty)
Mr Corbyn continued to cast a long shadow over the party despite Sir Keir last year banning him from running as a Labour candidate.
The Islington North MP ran as an independent, beating Labour Party candidate Praful Nargund by 7, 247 votes. Conservatives' Anne Harries placed fourth behind Green Party candidate Sheridan Kates.
Mr Corbyn has held the seat since 1983 and narrowly missed out on being handed out the Father of the House title as he heads back to the Commons.
In his victory speech, Mr Corbyn called for "kinder, gentler, more inclusive politics" as he urged the new government to address the main social issues grappling the country.
He added: "I couldn’t be more proud of my constituency than I am tonight and proud of our team that brought this result.

"Thank you very much Islington North for the result we have achieved tonight.”
Asked whether Sir Keir would be a good Prime Minister, Mr Corbyn said: "Well, let’s see what happens.
"He will become prime minister, he will have a very large majority in parliament, he has put forward a manifesto that is thin to put it mildly and doesn’t offer a serious economic alternative to what the Conservative government is doing.

"And so the demands on him are going to be huge, the demands from the people are going to be huge."
He added: “If you don’t give yourself space, to increase spending on the desperate social needs, I mentioned the two-child policy, but there are plenty of others, then I think there are going to be political problems.
"He must have known this when he agreed this manifesto which is a bit of a straitjacket around any proposals he may want to push forward.”
