The Liberal Democrats have secured 71 seats after what leader Sir Ed Davey hailed as a "record-breaking" night. Exit polls had predicted the party would gain control of 61 constituencies, one short of his previous best electoral result in 2005 when they won 62.

The Lib Dems have also succeeded in snatching more seats in the House of Commons than Reform UK despite getting a lower share of the vote.

The latest data shows that Sir Ed's party received 3,499,969 votes, 592,240 less than Nigel Farage's Reform.

The considerable gap between the Lib Dems's 71 seats and Reform's four is due to the right-wing's vote share being more spread out than that of the other party.

Reform UK candidates came in second in 98 constituencies, including in seats held by prominent Labour such as Yvette Cooper, Dan Jarvis and Shadow Education Secretay Bridget Philippson.

The right-wing party was initially predicted to win as many as 14 seats but fell behind expectations in pro-Brexit seats like Hartlepool, Barnsley North and Barnsley South – where Labour scored significant wins.

The Liberal Democrats focused their campaign on target seats, including the A30 corridor where the party won the St Ives and North Cornwall seats from the Conservatives.

Leader Nigel Farage, who only took over the party in June after previously stating he would not be running, was elected in Clacton-on-Sea and is due to enter Parliament for the first time in over 40 years on the British political scene.

Mr Farage overturned a comfortable 25,000 Conservative majority while former party leader Richard Tice took Boston and Skegness.

Former Tory MP Lee Anderson, who defected to Reform UK earlier this year, held on to his seat in Ashfield.

Completing the quarter of newly-elected MPs was Rupert Lowe in Great Yarmouth, who already pledged to "cause trouble" in Westminster.

Mr Farage hailed the party's electoral performance as a success and said it was "the beginning of the end of the Conservative Party."

He then said Reform would be turning its attention to Labour votes as he insisted there is "no enthusiasm" for newly-elected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

He said: "What is interesting is, there's no enthusiasm for Labour, there's no enthusiasm for Starmer whatsoever. In fact, about half of the vote is simply an anti-Conservative vote. We're coming for Labour, be in no doubt about that."
