BUKIT MERTAJAM: About 30 firemen battled through the night to control a raging fire at the storage facility of an electrical appliances company near Jalan Rozhan here.
Firemen in four fire engines were deployed to Wah Lee Chain Store Sdn Bhd at about 9.40pm Monday (Aug 16) before managing to control the fire at about 11.15pm.
Prior to the arrival of the firemen, the fire had already engulfed about 70% of the two-storey building.
A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said that although firemen had managed to bring the fire under control, some materials were still burning after midnight.
"Firefighters continued to monitor the area to prevent the embers from turning into blaze again,"he said.
He said the warehouse of the building was completely destroyed while the office and the loading bay section were partially destroyed.
He said firemen from Bukit Mertajam, Sungai Bakap, Jalan Perak and Bandar Perda fire station were assisted by several volunteer firefighters from the area.
The operation ended at about 5.30am.
He said a Fire Investigation Officer (FIO) has also been sent to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
