A Chicago man was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and attempted murder in what prosecutors said was a gang-related shooting in Evanston that left a 17-year-old dead and a 14-year-old girl fighting for her life.

Leonard Galvez, 19, of the 7400 block of North Damen Ave., was charged with first-degree murder and four counts of attempted first-degree murder for his role in the Nov. 28 shooting at a gas station in the 1900 block of Green Bay Road.

Killed in the shooting was Carl Dennison, 17, of Skokie. Four other teens were shot, including a 14-year-old girl who is still in critical condition and a 17-year-old boy who remains hospitalized, police said. The teens all knew each other, and two were in a car and three others were standing nearby when the shooting occurred, police said.

None of these victims were armed or had weapons of any kind at the time of the shooting, prosecutors said.

“It’s a good thing for the case, but a lot of work remains to be done,” said Evanston police commander Ryan Glew on Friday. “The investigation is still continuing.”

Galvez appeared for a bond hearing Friday at the Skokie courthouse.

He told investigators he was paid $300 by three gang members to take them to Evanston to carry out the shooting and that two of the individuals inside of his vehicle fired their weapons, according to prosecutors.

On Dec. 5, Galvez was driving the Infiniti used in this shooting and was involved in a single-car crash on Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, striking two light poles, prosecutors said. He was taken to the hospital and his impounded vehicle was located by investigating detectives, prosecutors said.

After his release from the hospital, Galvez contacted Evanston police looking for his vehicle and was arrested, prosecutors said.

No other arrests have been reported in the case.

The killing marked the sixth homicide in Evanston this year.

Galvez was denied bond Friday and is next scheduled for a Dec. 28 hearing.

Police are asking anyone with information about their investigation to contact Evanston detectives at 847-866-5040 or Text-A-Tip to CRIMES (274637) and to start the message with EPDTIP.
