He now needs to quickly figure out a plan of attack to deliver on his manifesto promises of economic growth, establishing a new energy company and sorting out the NHS.
Yesterday Sir Keir made a long list of appointments on his first day at Number 10. Rachel Reeves became Britain's first woman chancellor, Yvette Cooper is now Home Secretary and David Lammy is Foreign Secretary. Angela Rayner sat next to Sir Keir at the meeting as his Deputy Prime Minister.
Keir Starmer told ministers there was a "huge amount of work to do" at the meeting in Downning Street.

He said: "We have a huge amount of work to do, so now we get on with our work."
Amongst Sir Keir's other appointments were John Healey who was named Defence Secretary, Shabana Mahmood who is now Justice Secretary and Wes Streeting who will take the role of Health Secretary.
Bridget Phillipson is now Education Secretary and Ed Miliband Energy Secretary.
After 649 of the 650 Commons seats had been declared, Labour had a majority of 176. Labour had 412 seats and the Tories 121, which is the worst result in the Conservative Party's history. The Liberal Democrats won 71 seats and Reform now have five MPs.

In his first speech on Downing Street, Sir Keir said the British people had voted "decisively for change".

The Prime Minister has already spoken to US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He had also had calls with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Sir Keir has also talked to Irish premier Simon Harris.
