MELAKA: A woman and her boyfriend pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to abusing a five-year-old girl.

       The pleas of the woman, 30, and the man, 38, were recorded before judge Maziah Joary Mohd Tajudin yesterday.

       Based on the charge sheet, the duo had placed the child at risk by mistreatment and causing injuries.

       They had committed the offence at a house in Champor Garden City, Bandar Hilir at 11.30am on Aug 14.

       The charge was framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term not exceeding 10 years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

       The woman, who is the biological mother of the victim, and the man, who works as a security guard, were unrepresented.

       The court granted a bail of RM5,000 each to the couple, with additional conditions that require them to report to the nearest police station until their sentences are meted out on Sept 29.

       On Aug 15, Melaka CID Chief Asst Comm Mohd Sukri Kaman said police rescued the child after receiving information.
