KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed Fixed Term Parliament Act (FTPA) will be key to restoring confidence and good will among the public, says Housing and Local Development Minister Nga Kor Ming (pic).

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (Jan 16), Nga said the proposed Act would also ensure the stability of the country going forward.

"Once implemented, everyone will be able to focus their efforts entirely on nation building and economic prosperity instead of being continuously involved in the endless politicking that we faced recently," he said.

He added that it would also make future elections easier to plan for everyone involved.

"The Election Commission will be able to focus their efforts on planning any future election and no longer have to waste time to determine the optimal time to hold the election.

"Meanwhile, the public and businesses will be able to automatically determine when the next election will take place without needing to wait for an announcement from the EC," he said.

FTPA was first suggested by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Jan 13 in order to prevent mid-term changes of government.

This was in response to recent claims by some Opposition leaders that a plan to topple the unity government was underway.
