A man who was seriously injured in a 2019 shootout with Chicago police pleaded guilty Tuesday to firing at an officer and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Flamingo Jones entered the plea as part of an agreement that saw him sentenced to the minimum on one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer. Prosecutors also agreed to drop some two dozen other counts, including attempted murder, as part of the plea deal.
At the hearing Tuesday, Judge Timothy Joyce hinted that he believed the 10-year term negotiated by prosecutors and the defense was too lenient.
“But for the respect I have for both the attorneys, I wouldn’t go along with this agreement,” Joyce said.
With expected credit for good behavior and time already spent behind bars, Jones, 40, could be released in a little more than six years.
The shooting dates to February 2019, when Jones spotted officers in the 7400 block of South Bennett Avenue, reached toward his waistband and began to run, Assistant State’s Attorney Shelley Keane said Tuesday.
An officer gave chase and saw Jones remove a handgun from his waistband as he ran, and at one point, aimed the gun at the officer, Keane said. The officer fired shots “in fear of his life,” then Jones ran into a yard and fired shots at the officer, who returned fire, Keane said.
Other officers who had joined in the chase also fired at Jones in the yard, Keane said. Jones was shot in the foot and the shoulder.
The injuries were “fairly serious,” Jones’s attorney Steven Greenberg told the judge.
“The (plea) agreement took us a long time to reach, it was the product of many factors on both sides,” he said.
The Tribune has previously reported that 44 spent cartridge casings were recovered from the scene of the shooting.
Video of the shooting released by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability showed part of the foot chase. The footage showed one responding officer get out of his squad car and chase a man, later identified as Jones, on foot before exchanging gunfire with him.
