KUALA LUMPUR: A suspected car thief won no awards for boyfriend of the year after he ran over his girlfriend and partner in crime, leaving her to the police in a bid to save himself.

"Spotting the police, the male suspect reversed his car, running over the woman. When ordered to stop, the suspect sped off," said Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Saiful Annuar Yusoff in a statement Tuesday.

One shot was fired at the fleeing car but the suspect successfully escaped.

The 20 year old woman, who police have identified as the suspect's girlfriend and accomplice, suffered light injuries and was brought to hospital. She was then arrested to assist investigations.

"On Aug 30, at around 7.50pm, the police arrested the male suspect in Cyberjaya, after acting on information gathered.

"He then brought the police to several locations, where 11 cars that had previously been reported stolen were found.

"The cars were reported stolen within the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor areas between 2019 and 2021. The total value has been estimated to be around RM130,000," he said.

Investigations showed the cars were stolen for spare parts, which were then resold via social media.

"The male suspect had 17 previous criminal and drug related offences while the woman had three," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 (attempted murder) and Section 379A (motor theft) of the Penal Code.
