Gran Canaria has become the next holiday destination in Europe to be hit by devastating wildfires that could cause a risk to flights.

Flames have been reported just metres away from an array of antennae on a mountaintop, with some linked to air traffic control.

This could mean flights will be impacted by the fires, but the operators of Spain's airport AENA said that Gran Canaria's international air travel hub, which is on the east coast of the island, is currently operating as normal.

Hundreds of villagers had to be evacuated overnight as three major roads were closed while helicopters were deployed to put out the flames.

According to Antonio Morales, head of the Island Council of Gran Canaria 200 hectares of forest were completely razed in the fires.

It comes just days after other countries in Europe battled devastating flames, with Rhodes in Greece suffering devastating losses as thousands of Brits were evacuated and flown home.

In Algeria, 25 people have died, including 10 soldiers trying to get the flames under control.

The North African country is facing high winds and scorching summer temperatures, with 1,500 people needing to be evacuated.

The Interior Ministry announced 15 deaths and 24 injuries. In addition, the Defense Ministry later announced 10 soldiers were killed and 25 injured as they fought fires in the resort area of Beni Ksila east of the capital Algiers.

Temperatures across Southern Europe are reaching 45C as the heatwave continues raging on.

Thousands of holidays have been cancelled as a result of the wildfires, with Jet2 and EasyJet flying evacuated Brits home from Rhodes.

The island was thrown into chaos as staff fled from hotels and guests left their luggage stranded on beaches in an attempt to get away.

Rhodes is expected to remain shut for at least the next two weeks, with some areas unaffected by the fires.

Anton Radchenko, AirAdviser CEO, says under both UK and EU regulations, if a passenger's flight is cancelled, the airline must provide a replacement flight or cover a flight on any other operator that has seats on the next available flight.

Travellers whose flights are cancelled less than two weeks before they were due to travel are entitled to cash compensation of between £220 and £350, Mr Radchenko says.

The UK's ambassador to Greece is set to visit Rhodes today as wildfires there continue to burn.

Ambassador Matthew Lodge will meet with Greek officials including the deputy prime minister Ioannis Bratakos, south Aegean governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos and Rhodes mayor Andonis Cambourakis.
