Tories warned illegal migrant numbers will soar unless Keir Starmer comes up with a plan after figures showed 1,000 crossings under his watch.
The Prime Minister scrapped the Rwanda scheme on day one of his premiership and instead said he would smash the people smuggling gangs running the boats.

Border Force discovered 427 people crossing on seven boats on Monday, taking the total since the election to 1,185.
But Home Secretary Yvette Cooper suggested the figures are only going to get worse in the coming months as she warned Cabinet of a “difficult summer ahead”.
Predecessor James Cleverly told the Express: “Those making the crossings need to know that if they come here illegally then they will not stay.

“It is why dozens of EU leaders looked to copy the model of our Rwanda scheme.
“But Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper scrapped the Rwanda scheme on day one.
“It's like Christmas has come early for the people smugglers. And the record numbers coming over prove it.
“The numbers shouldn't come as a shock. And they will keep getting worse because Starmer has no desire and no plan to stop the boats.
“This is a man who described all immigration laws as racist.
“He would sooner take the knee than stand up to the vile gangs who peddle their trade in human misery.”

Senior Tory Sir John Hayes said Britain has a “proud” record of providing a safe haven to people fleeing persecution but he said it was “absolutely clear” that a very significant number of those making the crossing were economic migrants as they were predominantly young men.
“The Labour government has to either tackle this with vigour and rigour or admit that it is not going to and it doesn’t care about the integrity of our borders.
“Labour has not instinctively been keen on tackling immigration. They have made some noises about doing so but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
“Unless they take it seriously and act quickly, people will find them wanting and judge them accordingly.”
Reform MP Lee Anderson said the people smuggling gangs are “laughing all the way to the bank”.
He said: “For the past six months Starmer has been telling the world that he will smash the gangs.
“Well I've got news for the most unpopular leader to ever win a General Election, the gangs are laughing all the way to the bank and now Labour are in power they are buying bigger boats.
“I wouldn't be surprised to see the 1,000 that have crossed in the past 12 days out delivering leaflets for Labour at the next election.”
At a meeting of the Cabinet, the Home Secretary said small boats crossings were at a record high in the first half of the year and “indicated a difficult summer ahead”, a No 10 spokesman said.
She went on to say that tackling illegal migration was therefore an important part of “our European reset” where the government is working with European partners and agencies including Europol to tackle criminal gang networks and work to disrupt supply chains and illegal migration upstream.

Kevin Saunders, who led Border Force teams in Calais, warned during the election that Kurds waiting to cross the Channel had “come up with a name for Kier, which I think means ‘the friendly one’, because they all believe that he's going to be very good for illegal migration”.
The Prime Minister has refused to put a target or a timescale on reducing channel crossings.
Instead he is setting up a new Border Security Command to bring together police and prosecutors across borders gathering evidence and intelligence.
But on his first day in the job, Sir Keir scrapped the Rwanda deportation plan drawn up by the Tories to act as a deterrent.
He later indicated the situation will get worse before it gets better, admitting “it can’t be changed overnight”.
“Nobody but nobody should be making these crossings. The numbers are going up, not down,” he said.
“That is why we want to smash the gangs to stop those crossings. What I’m not going to do is pick an arbitrary date, an arbitrary number because that hasn’t worked in the past.
“But I do want to be clear that my intention is to break down the gangs that are running this vile trade putting people into boats on the coast of France.
“Nobody but nobody should be making that crossing.”

A total of 14,659 people have now arrived in 290 boats so far this year.
Overall in 2022, 45,728 people crossed the channel in 1,104 small boats, an average of 41 people per dinghy.
A Labour spokesman said (MUST KEEP SOME IN): “Dangerous small boat crossings are undermining our border security and putting lives at risk.
“Criminal smuggling gangs are making millions of profit from people crossing the Channel.
“For too long the smuggling gangs have been allowed to take hold along our borders, moving people across Europe with ease. That cannot continue.
“That’s why a Labour Government has set up a new Border Security Command, bringing together our intelligence and enforcement agencies, equipped with new counter terror-style power and up to 1,000 new specialist investigators stationed in the UK and across Europe to smash the criminal smuggling gangs and stop people arriving at our borders in the first place.”
This year, smugglers have increased the number of people they cram into one boat, with an average of 50 people per vessel.
Four people died on Friday after their overloaded boat capsized just off the French coast. Another 56 passengers were rescued by authorities and taken back to France.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “Everyone wants to see an end to the dangerous small boat crossings.
