Kensington Palace garden undergoes floral redesign ahead of Diana statue unveiling

Royal gardeners have been working to transform one of the late Princess of Wales’ favourite spots. The redesign features more than 4,000 of her favourite varieties of flowers.

Sweet peas, ballerina roses, dahlias and forget-me-nots were some of the varieties planted, as part of a two-year project.

The unveiling ceremony will mark what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.

The event will be hosted by Diana’s two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

It will only attended by a small group of people due to coronavirus regulations.

The guest list currently features some members of Diana’s family, members of the statue committee, the statue's sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley and garden designer Pip Morrison.

The event has been drastically scaled back from its original 100-plus guest list due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Kate’s reported absence at the unveiling will be seen as a blow to those who were hoping she would help heal the rift between Harry and William.

Earlier this month, a royal source told the Mirror: "The Duchess has seen this project evolve from its conception and now to the finished article and undoubtedly wants to be there to support her husband.

"No doubt there will be tensions between the Cambridges and Harry, but they all recognise that despite the obvious and deep-rooted issues between them, they want the day to be solely about the Princess of Wales’s enduring legacy."

Kate has been described as the family’s “peacemaker” by her uncle Gary Goldsmith.

He told Closer: “If anyone can bring peace to the royals, Kate can. Kate is a brilliant arbiter and peacemaker.

“Every bone in her body is about making friends and doing the best she can… she’s trying to mediate.”
