GEORGE TOWN: After a two-hour downpour due to a storm along the northern coast here on Tuesday (June 29) morning, flash floods have occurred at various parts of Tanjung Bungah.

The storm occurred from 8am to 10am and caused flash floods among kampung houses in Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah and Tanjung Tokong.

Penang infrastructure and transportation committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the storm recorded 150mm of rainfall within two hours.

“This is an extraordinary amount of rainfall as 50mm is already considered very heavy rain.

“150mm over two hours is quite close to a great storm like that of November 2017.

“With this amount of rainfall, no normal infrastructure will be able to contain the water runoff,” he said when contacted.

Zairil said his office is currently assisting the relevant authorities in providing aid such as food, temporary shelter and other essentials to the flood victims.

Meanwhile, on video clips of water gushing down slopes in parts of Tanjung Bungah, Zairil said he was aware that such incidents happened at two spots in the area.

“From the clips, it looks serious but so far, no safety hazards were reported. The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has gone to the site to investigate. We understand the people’s concerns but there should be no immediate danger," he said.
