He said a dog was barking inside the house.

Police and ambulance staff retrieved the fingertip but doctors were unable to reattach it.

Mr Stefano is considering legal action against the house owner, or his employer over the incident in October 2020 in Tadcaster, North Yorks.

But police think his injury may have resulted from him withdrawing his finger too quickly from the letterbox.

North Yorkshire Police said: “An officer made inquiries at the property and found no dog present.
