The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for several northwest Chicago suburbs early Monday morning after overnight temps dipped to their lowest point so far this fall, forecasters said.
The coldest reported temperature overnight in the area was 30 degrees in Aurora. Chicago, meanwhile, saw temperatures drop to 35 degrees at O’Hare International Airport, where the city’s temperature is officially recorded.
The freeze warning remained in effect until 9 a.m. for Kane, Kendall, Winnebago, Lee, Lake, McHenry, Boone, Ogle, LaSalle and DeKalb counties, heralding temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s.
While the city proper has yet to see freezing temperatures this fall, the weather service said that’s likely to change Monday night when temperatures are expected to drop to the high 20s at O’Hare.
However, the inner city tends to remain a few degrees above the official recorded temperature at the airport, the weather service said, and most city dwellers won’t experience freezing weather until Tuesday night.
As the Chicago area begins to experience colder weather, forecasters warn the ensuing frost and freeze could kill crops and some plants and could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, such as water pipes or in-ground sprinkler systems.
To prevent pipes from bursting, they should be “wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly,” according to the weather service.
While the cold may not be welcome, it isn’t unseasonable for Chicago’s first week of November, which is usually the month when low temperatures begin to drop below freezing. However, the forecast is a few degrees below average for the beginning of the month and may be the longest stretch of below average days since summer, the weather service said.
The daily high temperature for the rest of the week in Chicago will remain in the mid-40s, forecasters said, with a potential increase to 50 degrees on Friday. Nighttime temperatures could fall into the low 20s, with high temperatures in the mid-30s. No precipitation is expected.
