A 17-year-old boy who was fatally wounded Monday in the South Shore neighborhood has been identified, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Shortly before 5 a.m. Monday, two 17-year-old boys were outside in the 8100 block of South Shore Drive when two gunmen approached on foot and opened fire, striking them both, Chicago police said.

One of the boys suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and was initially taken in critical condition to UChicago Medicine. He was later pronounced dead and identified as Joshua Ayala, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Another 17-year-old boy suffered a wound to the ankle and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition, police said.

Police said the gunmen ran off after the shootings and were not in custody. Detectives were investigating.
