Royal commentator Emily Andrews said that Meghan Markle's decision to "go public" with her experiences as a working royal during an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey was part of her plan to "force change". Meghan states that felt "silenced" by the Palace and Royal Family and wished to set the record straight on the background behind Megxit.

Emily Andrews said: " One of her motivations for going public on Oprah was to try and force change.

"The Oprah interview was kind of the apotheosis of all of that because she effectively was saying ‘if you’re not listening to me when I talk to you privately and nothing changes, I’m going to press the nuclear button and go public.'"

Meghan's sit-down interview with US chat show host was aired on March 7, 2021.

It immediately caused a PR crisis for the Royal Family, as Meghan and Harry publicly aired their grievances with the institution.

During the interview, Meghan revealed that she had been left feeling suicidal whilst pregnant with her first child, after allegedly being denied mental health support and made to feel vilified by Palace staff.

She also spoke about Buckingham Palace's refusal to correct damaging tabloid articles that were regularly circulated about the Duchess, often with colonial, racial undertones.

Prince Harry also joined his wife for the 2-hour special and spoke about the rift between himself and his family.

He said he felt "really let down" by Prince Charles and characterised his relationship with Prince William as "space".

The couple also revealed their confusion at the Royal Family's decision to deny their son Archie a title and to financially cut them off following the Megxit announcement.

However, the most damning allegation was that an unnamed senior member of the Royal Family made a racist remark about the skin tone of their unborn son.

Following the interview, Prince William was questioned by journalists outside a school visit, prompting him to state: "The Royal Family are very much not a racist family."

Relations between the couple and The Firm have considerably worsened since the airing of the explosive interview.

Meghan and Prince Harry decided to step away from the Royal Family in January 2020, agreeing to forfeit their HRH status and return their royal patronages.

They subsequently moved to California and currently reside in Montecito with their two young children.

Both the Duke and the Duchess have been outspoken about their experiences within the Royal Family, with Prince Harry frequently attacking the institution in high-profile interviews.

In a solo interview with Oprah Winfrey for their Apple TV+ series 'The Me You Can't See', he stated that he would no longer remain silent about his experience and mistreatment.
