PETALING JAYA: In conjunction with National Women's Day, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has paid tribute to the invaluable sacrifices by female frontliners battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
While highlighting the role of women on the front lines battling Covid-19, Dr Wee also said women played a vital role as professionals in nation-building, spurring development and economic growth.
"The sacrifices of women in the front lines are indeed huge for society and the nation," he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Aug 25).
Dr Wee also said women involvement in politics had clearly proved that they are willing to get out of their comfort zone.
"The presence of women also creates gender balance and it creates a fair and just society," he added.
Dr Wee also condemned violence against women, as he stressed the need to empower women so they are no longer burdened by issues of domestic violence and workplace sexual harassment.
"We need to empower women because they contribute to a lot of the success that we achieved today.
"Happy 59th National Women's Day," he added.
The country celebrates its National Women's Day on Aug 25 every year. It was first celebrated in 1962 at Merdeka Stadium. The aim is to increase public awareness of the role played by women and provide a platform for the gathering of women from diverse communities.
