Nigel Farage has a choice between a wet weekend in Clacton and the bright lights of the US

Nigel Farage must go down in history as the most influential politician never to win a parliamentary seat.

Without the former Ukip and then Brexit Party leader chipping away at the cause, Britain would still be part of the European Union.

David Cameron dismissed Mr Farage and his party as "fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists” but a decade later lost the most significant vote in modern times to those same people.

So it is no surprise that No 10 has been mulling ways to deal with the threat of his latest party, Reform.

The insurgent group’s success comes at the hands of a band of candidates whose public profiles are reasonably low.

So a return to the frontline by Mr Farage would boost their chances considerably.

He has repeatedly shown his ability to connect with voters, securing four million votes for Ukip in 2015 and forcing Lord Cameron into promising a referendum in the hope of seeing off the threat.

A successful sting on ITV’s box office I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! helped him reach a new audience.

And a new poll suggests Reform would take four points of both Labour and the Tories if Mr Farage decides to front the campaign.

It is no wonder that Tory strategists are eyeing up November 14 for the general election in the hope of forcing Mr Farage out of the game.

They believe he will choose the glamorous Washington whirlwind of a presidential campaign with his friend Donald Trump over campaign on a drizzly day in November only to fail to secure a parliamentary seat for an eighth time.

But as friends of Mr Farage hint, they may not have to bother at all as he is said to be “very tempted by a big offer” in the United States.
