Fry, 66, said he was woken up at 4.15am by an "insistent voice ordering all at the hotel to go down to the air raid shelter".

Alongside a screenshot of the missile alert, he wrote on Instagram: "So here we are.

"Someone showed me an app to download: as you can see, agrees with the order to stay sheltered."

The Blackadder actor is in the Ukrainian capital to co-host a summit with Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska on mental health with the spouses of world leaders.

In a series of posts on social media, Fry told how guests and staff alike were ushered into the hotel's basement.

He said despite the panic, the atmosphere was somewhat relaxed.

Fry added: "Coffee machine. Loungers. People laughing and chattering quite happily."

He also shared a picture of several people sitting at tables, adding: "I wasn’t smart enough to think of bringing a laptop down.

A few hours later, Fry posted a photo of people sitting outside a cafe.

He wrote: "The all clear sounds and life goes on in Kyiv."

Fry travelled to the war-torn country on Monday via train ahead of the meeting scheduled for today.

The conference, which he is set to chair with President Zelensky's wife, has the theme Mental Health: Fragility and Resilience of the Future.

Organisers said it would involve discussions with international health ministers and celebrities.

Since arriving in Kyiv, Fry has shared a number of posts and praised the "profound unshakeable determination" of Ukrainians.

He said he had witnessed doctors ignoring an air raid warning as they prioritised operating on a wounded soldier.

Fry said: "Next I met two young men who laughed as they teased each other about the differences between their new prosthetic legs.

"Then I talked to a young woman who lost her husband on the Russian front only two weeks ago.
