MACC urged to further probe missing money case

PUTRAJAYA: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has asked the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to further investigate “other offences” in the case pertaining to the missing US$6.94mil (RM29mil) that recently saw the remand of three MACC officers to assist in the probe.

The AGC said this after it had studied and reviewed the investigation papers of that case that were submitted by MACC on Sept 28.

“The AGC found that there are other offences that require the enforcement body to carry out further investigation.

“Investigation papers have been returned (to MACC) for further action,” it said yesterday.

The MACC could not be contacted for comment.

It recently confirmed that three of its senior officers were remanded for six days to assist in investigations into allegations of abuse of power and misconduct in a case involving a “former senior government servant who has been discharged but not acquitted by the court”.

In April, former head of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation Datuk Hasanah Ab Hamid was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the High Court for criminal breach of trust involving RM50.4mil of government funds.

The case was withdrawn following a new development.

The arrest of the three MACC officers followed reports that Hasanah had attempted to reclaim the seized money but found part of it missing and replaced with counterfeit notes.
