KUALA LUMPUR: In light of the Earth day 2022, Malaysians have been summoned to join forces and contribute their time and energy to cultivating sustainability practices for our environment and for the sake of our future generations.

       Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said practices that could harm the environment such as the use of disposable plastic should be avoided, while the use of energy-saving resources should be made a habit in life.

       He also called on the private sector as well as the government-linked companies (GLCs) to join in and play their role in preserving the environment.

       “In line with the Eighth Focus in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) which is Accelerating Green Growth, economic development should not affect the environment, while green coverage should be maintained.

       “Efforts to accelerate green growth, enhance energy sustainability and transform the water sector, must remain at the core of the country's socio-economic development,” he said.

       The government, he added, will continue to fulfil its commitment to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 45% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, based on the intensity of 2005 emissions, in line with the aspiration of making Malaysia a low carbon country.

       “I realise this requires a concerted effort as well as a high level of green commitment and investment.

       “However, I am confident that with the involvement of the Malaysian Family, this commitment will ensure that Malaysia is in line with the efforts of other countries to achieve global goals in tackling climate change and enhancing the country's competitiveness.

       “I pray that the entire Malaysian Family will continue to play a role and take responsibility for passing on a sustainable Malaysia to future generations,” he said.
