ISKANDAR PUTERI: Police have arrested 87 people around Johor for involvement in illegal lottery and online gambling activities.

State police chief Comm M. Kumar (pic) said a four-day joint operation was carried out in various locations from Wednesday to Saturday (April 17 to 20).

“We raided 87 illegal gambling spots including sundry shops and coffee shops.

“A total of 69 men and 18 women were arrested. We also seized RM12,612, as well as 112 pieces of note paper, 86 mobile phones and 26 printers,” he told reporters after witnessing the handing over of duties to the new Iskandar Puteri OCPD here on Sunday (April 21).

Comm Kumar added that the suspects, aged 18 to 64 years, have been remanded to assist with police investigations under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

He said police would also work with local councils and Tenaga Nasional Bhd to revoke the business licences and cut electric supply of the premises involved in illegal activities.

“We will write to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to shut down those websites (offering online gambling services),” he added.
