Gardeners urged to sow 3 plants before the end of February to have colourful garden early

Green-fingered Brits are urged to begin their planting and sowing before the end of February to allow seedlings to begin to establish themselves early.

By growing certain plants around this time, they will begin to grow during the early spring months.

This then allows them to have a head start before the summer heat officially hits which could lend itself to an earlier and larger harvest down the line, including having an extra colourful garden.

Early spring often provides milder temperatures in the UK, making it an ideal time for germination and early plant growth.

TikTok channel @gardening.with.ish, shares his three easy-maintenance plants to grow this February.

“The first one is known as an aquilegia and these are amazing if you’re looking for an early burst of colour in your garden,” he began the video.

“They’ll reach about 70 to 80cm tall and you can sow these directly from your greenhouse or in the cold frame straight away.”

The cornflowers were the next plants to sow by the end of February which you “can sow directly outside from March”.

TikTok account @gardening.with.ish offers further advice with these plants when it comes to those wanting to get some extra height on them.

He explains: “Start them off indoors from around about now and you’ll get an extra foot height and it looks fantastic.”

In the video, he added why both aquilegia and cornflowers are fantastic to sow in your garden now is because of how well they resist cold weather.

He added: “Whilst the cornflowers will give you a nice, beautiful annual colour, remember the aqualegica’s are perennial so they will come back year after year.”

The last plant on the list is dill which is a firm favourite among many gardeners thanks to the herbs culinary versatility in the kitchen.

Dill is a fragrant, delicious herb which can be used in many different recipes and is described as being a great addition to a polytunnel.

This is because the dill plant also repels pests and attracts essential insects to your polytunnel.

“I keep mine indoors most of the time, most of the season, until around the summertime,” explained @gardening.with.ish.

He added: “I like to start this off as early as I can to get the best flavour off of them and I just love dill because it goes so well with a salad.”
