A GRANDMOTHER has claimed she has spent years in a "living hell" from her messy neighbour's garden overflowing with rubbish and filth attracting "foot-long" rats.

Sian Butler, 51, says she is so scared of the rodents that she rarely goes into her own back garden now and refuses to have any of her 10 grandchildren to stay with her.

Sian has been a resident for 17 years but now says she's not able to use her garden

The resident of 17 years also said that that she has had to call pest control five times in the last year to keep the vermin under control.

And Sian claims the problem has lasted more than a year - with her neighbour only recently starting to tidy the yard.

At its worse, her next door neighbour, a mother-of-11, appeared to have piles of clothes, toys, food waste, broken chairs and other furniture, a half-full skip of rubbish.

She also has approximately 30 bin bags that line the wall behind her garden.

Sian, from Briton Ferry, south Wales said: “I’m absolutely sick and tired of the mess she leaves out there.

"I’ve seen rats at least a foot long crawling among it and climbing over her fence onto my garden wall and I can't risk my grandchildren going near them, so I don't feel I can have them at all over anymore.

"The stress of living next door to her and her family is making me physically ill with depression and anxiety.

“My mental health has been a challenge for me for a long time but this situation has made it much worse and prolonged it.

“I know she must be busy looking after such a large family, but there really is no excuse for letting your garden get in this state. She has made my life a living hell.”

Sian claims she's been living with the rubbish for five years with it only beginning to pile up when her neighbour moved in.

She added that discussing the issue with her neighbour has apparently failed.

But the neighbour insists the mess has built up recently due to a family loss and the resident has been working to get the rubbish all cleared soon.

Sian's neighbour said: "I hired the skip a week ago and have filled it with general waste from the house as part of that clear-out.

"It will be removed next week and or any other items in my back garden will be going to.

“Quite frankly, I’ve got bigger things to be thinking about than people complaining about a bit of household rubbish in my back garden right now."

Sian says she has complained to her local authority, Neath Port Talbot Council, “numerous times“ about the rubbish in her neighbours eyesore garden with them sending skips "every so often" as well as council pest control to manage the mess.

Neath Port Talbot Council confirmed that they had a "recent complaint" which was being investigated, they added that had had another from August and others dating back various years.
