An investigation has been launched into the deaths of two soldiers from the same garrison who died over the weekend in separate incidents.

Police were called to Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire on Saturday morning after the “sudden death” of a 33-year-old man.

One day later, an 18-year-old man was found on railway tracks in Wythenshawe, Manchester, and pronounced dead at the scene, British Transport Police said.

Both deaths are being investigated, but police added that neither was being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for the Army said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of two soldiers.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both soldiers and we ask that their privacy is respected at this sad and difficult time.

“The deaths, which took place at Catterick Garrison and in Manchester, are not connected.”

Police have confirmed they are assisting in preparing reports for the coroner.

Catterick is the British Army’s largest garrison, with more than 13,000 personnel.

It is home to several Army units, including 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, the Royal Lancers and 4 Scots (The Highlanders).
