The 20,000 Afghan refugees set to resettle in the UK will be given a state given benefit of £5.64 per day. This money, allocated by the UK Government, is expected to cover the costs of essentials like food, clothing and toiletries.

Housing is provided free and options will include council houses other would-be tenants have refused to move into, MyLondon reports.

Refugees are not allowed to work or claim benefits in the UK.

Charities have been called to help provide refugees with necessities as many of them are getting off the plane from Afghanistan with only the clothes on their backs and no basics such as toothbrushes and soap.

Many fear that even with the work of charities who are helping them find clothing and providing toiletries, many refugees will undoubtedly be in poverty.

A spokesperson for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), said: “Asylum seekers often don’t have the right to work in the UK which means there is no possibility of them ever being able to work, let alone ‘steal’ a job.

“Refugees also return a net benefit outcome on our economy when they are allowed to work in this country.”

The UK Ministry of Defence has flown out more than 15,000 people from Afghanistan, 8,000 of whom were Afghan nationals, and plans to accept 20,000 Afghan refugees over the long term.

The British government's Afghan Citizens' Resettlement Scheme will aim to allow 5,000 Afghans to settle in the UK in the first year and will focus on women, children, as well as religious and other minorities, in greatest danger from the Taliban.

The UK has also committed to resettle former interpreters and other locally employed civilians.
