So far, this summer has been a bit of a letdown, with few days of sunshine to speak of and plenty of rain around.

       However, with the tide appearing to turn and the mercury rising, Brits will be eyeing up weekends away in the country's most-loved seaside resorts.

       Many will be looking to drive to their closest sandy beach and as such, will be keen to save a few quid by choosing a local spot with the cheapest parking.

       But where in the UK is the cheapest seaside town to park your car - and is it close to you? Express.co.uk breaks it down so you can find the least costly place to park your motor.

       According to research from Compare the Market, the cheapest place to leave your car for a six-hour stay is one of Britain's most iconic seaside resorts: Barry in South Wales.

       The resort, made even more famous by the hit-show Gavin & Stacey, boasts sandy beaches and a fabulous arcade that promises fun for all the family.

       A six-hour stay in Barry will set you back only ￡2.50 on average. Given that motorists can be stung for ￡20 for a similar length stay, that really is a steal.

       The second and third cheapest locations are in the east of the UK, in Suffolk and Sussex respectively.

       Lowestoft in East Anglia is a fabulous place to bask in the summer sun and only costs ￡3.15 on average to park in.

       Next on the list is Bexhill-on-Sea, another grand spot, which on average sees motorists fork out the meagre sum of ￡3.43.

       Those up north shouldn't worry either, Wallasey in Merseyside is shy of ￡5 for six hours, as is Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire.
