Scottish transgender guidance: Pupils 'may come out at any age' and can pick gender at 4

Scottish government guidance says transgender people "may come out at any age" and calls on teachers not to tell them it is "just a phase".

However, to formally record a change, under-16s must write to the school alongside their parent or carer.

Schools are also urged to develop "gender-neutral" uniforms.

Marion Calder of campaign group for Women Scotland said the new guidance showed "a removal of parental rights".

She said: "We should not be teaching children that you can change sex, because you cannot."

But Shirley-Anne Somerville, the SNP education secretary, said: "This guidance outlines how schools can support transgender young people while ensuring the rights of all pupils are fully respected."
