The Duchess of York has said in her most recent interview that Princess Diana would have been "obsessed" with her young grandchildren. Sarah Ferguson told People magazine that Diana "loved" being around her own two sons when they were growing up and would have approved of Kat, the Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan Markle, as each "has got her own voice".

       Fergie said: "She would be very proud of her sons and their wives.

       "And she would be just like me, obsessed with her grandchildren. Because that's what she loved.

       "If she were sitting with me right now, I know she would say, 'I am so proud of both of my boys and the wonderful wives they have chosen.

       "Each has got her own voice."

       Neither Kate nor Meghan Markle ever met Princess Diana, as she died in 1997 but they have both been repeatedly compared to their late mother-in-law in terms of style and character.

       Sarah Ferguson also revealed that the Princess of Wales had "adored" her two nieces, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

       The Duchess of York and Princess Diana had been close friends since they were teenagers and became 'best friends' after marrying into the Royal Family.

       Diana had in fact been responsible for introducing Fergie to her future husband Prince Andrew, after she invited her to accompany the Royal Family to the Ascot races.

       Sarah Ferguson is now the proud grandmother to her daughter Eugenie's son, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

       Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed their first child on February 9, 2021, and named him in honour of his late great-grandfather Prince Philip.

       Meanwhile, Princess Beatrice is also expecting her first child with partner Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

       Buckingham Palace announced her pregnancy in May and said the baby is expected to be born later this autumn.

       If Princess Diana were alive, she would be the grandmother to five young children.

       Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3, are the children of her eldest son Prince William and his wife Catherine.

       Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently welcomed their second child, daughter Lilibet Diana on June 4. They were already parents to two-year-old Archie Harrison.

       During her lifetime, Diana was known for her love of children and had previously worked as a nursery assistant and a nanny before marrying the Prince of Wales.

       She died in 1997 at the age of 36 following a fatal car accident in Paris.

       Although Prince William and Prince Harry have had a strained relationship for the last few years, they reunited on July 1 to unveil a statue in their mother's honour. The statue depicts Diana standing with three young children and has been placed in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace.
