Great-granddaughter Helen Pankhurst said officials have "clearly" neglected the burial site of the suffragette leader. Military grave restorer Steve Davies called the grade II-listed plinth a national disgrace.

       He added: "I can't say it's ever been cleaned. It's in an awful state." Despite the charity Royal Parks finding the grave damaged in a 2018 survey, it remains untouched ？ and as it is made of sandstone, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea say it should be left alone.

       Charli Kerr, manager of London's Brompton Cemetery, said of the plot: "It is our belief [cleaning] should be done sparingly by a professional."
