A man who Chicago police say was holding a knife when officers responded to an “assault in progress” call Sunday night was both hit with a Taser and shot by authorities, according to Chicago police.
Officers were called to the 2600 block of West Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park at 7:22 p.m., according to a police media notification.
According to police, the man “brandished a knife toward officers” once they arrived. At least two officers drew an item from their utility belts — one a service weapon and the other a Taser.
Police initially said the officer who drew the gun “fired one shot” at the man “but did not strike him.” They later updated that information, saying the man suffered “a graze wound to the upper right thigh.”
The second officer then used a Taser on the man, “who was then taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment,” police said.
At least one officer also was taken to an area hospital for observation, but authorities did not say what happened to the officer or provide an updated condition for the officer.
As is routine, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is reviewing the specifics of the case, including launching a comprehensive use of force investigation, police said. A request seeking more information from COPA did not receive an immediate response Monday morning.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days, as is routine.
