       PETALING JAYA: Malaysia aims to achieve greater heights in the shipping industry by adopting an inclusive approach bringing all nations towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

       The Transport Minister reaffirmed Malaysia’s candidature for election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council (Category C) for 2022-2023 biennium, which will be held during the IMO Assembly 32nd session from 6-15 December 2021.

       "To date, Malaysia has ratified 26 out of 58 IMO Conventions, ensuring that safety, security of shipping, and the protection of the marine environment is prioritised both locally and regionally," he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Nov 10) after attending the country's 50th Anniversary dinner of its membership in the IMO.

       The event was attended by heads of missions and representatives from more than 55 IMO members states.

       Malaysia acceded to the IMO Convention on 12th June 1971 and became the sixty-ninth (69) official member state of the IMO.

       To date, Malaysia has ratified 26 out of 58 IMO Conventions, ensuring that safety, security of shipping, and the protection of the marine environment is prioritised both locally and regionally.
