NIBONG TEBAL: With air quality getting better in the surroundings of Kampung Kebun Baru, residents who were earlier affected by the Pulau Burung landfill fire can now return home starting Monday (Feb 7).
The green light was given by the state Department of Environment (DOE) based on its latest observation and technical reviews, said the South Seberang Prai District Disaster Management Committee.
However, the committee said those from Ladang Byram were still advised to stay put at the temporary shelter until a stable air quality reading is obtained by the DOE.
The statement also said that those staying in the district had been advised to pay attention to their health during this period of time.
The committee said those who experience breathing difficulties or feel unwell must seek treatment at nearby clinics and hospitals.
The fire at the more-than-11ha landfill broke out on Jan 12.
Toxic fumes at the landfill resulted in air pollution that affected Ladang Byram and Kampung Kebun Baru nearby, prompting the evacuation of some 400 people from both villages.
Ten schools within a 10km radius of the landfill were ordered to close for three days from Jan 19.
