Inside the £3.2bn mega-plan to free beautiful country from huge traffic gridlock

This country has one of the worst traffic problems in the world but it could be solved by a huge new infrastructure plan.

Bogotá is Colombia’s bustling capital and home to around 11 million people.

Shocking statistics show that a commuter loses over 10 days a year to gridlock traffic in the city, reports The B1M.

The ongoing issue could be solved with the help of a new plan which could allow locals to save time.

After decades of facing the issue, a metro is now planned for the city which will feature a driverless train system.

With this new addition, over a million cars could be taken off the streets each day meaning traffic will not be nearly as bad.

But, the development has faced many setbacks since it was first thought of including political problems and technical issues.

While traffic is an issue in the city, Colombia is generally known for its innovative public transport solutions.

The TransMilenio, a network of segregated express bus lanes launched in 2000 and has since inspired similar systems worldwide showing its huge success.

Colombia has been home to multiple infrastructure accomplishments as seen in the country’s second-largest city, Medellín.

The city has transformed through groundbreaking projects including cable cars and outdoor escalators.

Bogotá is a cultural hub known for its vibrant art scene making it an exciting centre in Latin America.

It is also an important economic and political hub in Columbia - the city is also known for being a centre for Columbia’s exports.

The city is one of the highest points in the Americas at a huge 8,660 ft above sea level, it is the third-highest point in South America.

The first proposal for a Bogotá metro surfaced in 1942. Political instability and financial challenges stalled progress for decades.

By the 1980s, consensus on building a metro began to form but despite this and building work finally began in 2021. It is not confirmed when the metro will be available for use but works are underway.
