> The daily also reported that a non-governmental organisation has revealed that some teenage girls from poor and low income families were willing to choose pregnancy just so to avoid buying sanitary pads for nine months.
Sanitary Bank Malaysia secretary Reena Awliyatul Imani Reezal Merican said due to menstrual poverty, which usually occurs in rural areas, women, especially teenagers, were willing to take the easy way out by getting pregnant.
“When pregnant, they think for nine months there is no need to buy sanitary napkins without thinking about other things that they would need to spend on when they have given birth,” she said, adding there were also women who used newspapers as sanitary pads.
“They do not think of the danger to themselves, this is because newspapers have carbon that can cause bacterial infections on their private parts and can cause death.
“Besides that, the issue of ‘menstrual poverty’ also causes teenage girls, especially school students, to often skip school due to problems, which in turn affects their learning,” she said.
She said menstrual poverty awareness needed to be created within the community by authorities so that the issue is given serious attention.
